Medalcraft Mint Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University

Our opportunity: Deliver a treasured piece for “medallioning”

Graduates of Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University, had received a gold stole during convocation ceremonies for the first 15 years of the college’s existence. That changed in 2003 with the arrival of Mark Jacobs, Vice Provost and Dean of the College, who believed a more substantial commemorative was appropriate to mark the huge amount of work and commitment it takes to graduate with honors.

The Medalcraft Mint team produced a two-inch brass medallion with an antique finish and enamel color fill that includes a graphic of the Barrett Honors College gonfalon symbol on one side and the ASU/Barrett logo on the reverse. The thesis director for each student has the honor of bestowing the medallion during convocation in an act referred to as “medallioning.” This piece of the ceremony encapsulates the mentoring relationship between student and faculty advisor.

Barrett leadership believes the student-advisor relationship is unique and precious. For students, faculty mentoring helps them understand and apply the unique and important intellectual gifts they possess. From a faculty perspective, there is simply no greater professional joy than witnessing and sharing in the accomplishments of our students.
