Green Bay, WI, January 5, 2009 - Designed and minted by The Medalcraft Mint of Green Bay, Wisconsin, the official inaugural Medallion of Barack Obama is on its way to Washington D.C. for the January 20th ceremony. This is Medalcraft's third consecutive Presidential Inaugural Medallion. Medalcraft's design features a stunning "high relief" portrait of the President-elect on the front side and a creative treatment of the Inaugural Seal on the back side.
Barack Obama, the 44th President-to-be, and the first African American President of the United States, gave the medallion his personal approval the last week of December. The competition for this prestigious contract was very intense, and in the end, it was the "likeness" of Barack Obama.
The Presidential Inaugural Committee has commissioned the following:
- 2.75" bronze medallions
- 2.75" .999 fine silver medallions
- 1.25" 14KT solid gold coins
With the time frame of the entire Presidential transition being compressed, Medalcraft Mint began production on New Year's Day to fill the anticipated demand. "The company is honored and quite excited about producing this medallion for Barack Obama," said company president, Jerry Moran.
